- Which foods contain the most microplastics?
- Current research points to a few clearly nameable groups. Seafood, especially mussels and other shellfish that filter water, is among the more contaminated foods, along with table salt, in which particles have been detected depending on source, and drinks, above all bottled water. Add to that food heated or stored in plastic, since heat and abrasion release particles. Fruit and vegetables usually contain less but can pick up traces via water and soil. So the burden is spread widely but concentrates in these few sources.
- How do microplastics get into food in the first place?
- By two main routes, both easy to follow. The first is the environment: plastic breaks down in water and soil into tiny particles that animals and plants take up, entering the food chain, which is why seafood and salt are affected. The second is direct contact during processing and packaging: water from plastic bottles picks up particles from the bottle itself, and food heated or cut on plastic collects abrasion. The second route is the one you can most easily influence at home.
- Are microplastics in food dangerous?
- On the current evidence, harm in humans is not established, and this honesty matters more than a shortcut either way. The World Health Organization concluded in 2019 for drinking water that microplastics do not appear to pose a recognisable risk on the thin data available, while stressing the need for more research. Laboratory and animal studies show particles can trigger inflammatory responses, but a proven link to human disease through food is missing. The accurate description is uncertainty, not established danger.
- How do I lower my intake from food?
- A few simple steps cover most of it without changing your diet. Drink filtered tap water rather than bottled water, which a 2024 PNAS study found carried especially high particle counts. Do not heat food in plastic or pour hot dishes into plastic containers; use glass or stainless steel. Store food in glass rather than plastic. - Do I have to give up seafood or salt?
- No, giving them up is not necessary on current evidence and would be an overreaction. Seafood and salt do contain measurable particles but provide important nutrients, and the amount taken in is small relative to overall environmental exposure. More sensible than avoidance is to act on the easily controllable sources, water and heating or storing in plastic. A varied diet remains the right foundation, and the microplastic question changes little about that.
