- Is there really plastic in chewing gum?
- In most conventional gum yes, and this is not a scandal but long known. The chewable mass, listed on the ingredients as gum base, is made in mainstream brands from synthetic polymers, essentially food-grade plastic that gives gum its chewable texture. A 2025 study presented at a scientific meeting showed that chewing can transfer small amounts of microplastic from this base into saliva. So what is new is not the plastic in gum but the measurement that some of it is released while you chew.
- How much microplastic do I take in from chewing?
- On the current, still preliminary measurement, a small amount, and the framing matters. The 2025 study estimated that on average a piece of gum can release a few hundred microplastic particles into saliva, with most coming out in the first few minutes of chewing. That sounds like a lot but is in the same ballpark as what people already take in through water and food, and the study was small and not yet fully peer-reviewed. It shows a plausible route of intake, not an established health risk.
- Is there gum without plastic?
- Yes, and this is the most practical answer. So-called natural gum uses chicle, the dried sap of the sapodilla tree, or similar tree resins as the chewable base instead of synthetic polymers. These varieties contain no synthetic plastic in the gum base and are sold in natural-food stores and online. Honestly noted, they are often pricier, have a slightly different texture, and the base can still shed fine particles as a natural polymer while chewing, though of plant origin. If you want to avoid plastic in gum, this is the easiest alternative.
- Should I stop chewing gum?
- For microplastic worry alone that is not necessary, but it is an easy thing to drop if it reassures you. The amount taken in is small on current evidence and its health meaning is unclear, so gum is not a special exception among the many everyday sources of microplastic. If you want to take in less plastic anyway, switching to natural gum or simply chewing less often is a simple, low-cost step. Panic is not warranted; a calm, deliberate choice is fine.
- What are the bigger dietary sources of microplastics?
- Gum is more of a small, visible source; the bigger ones are elsewhere. Current research points mainly to water, especially bottled water, seafood and salt, and food heated or stored in plastic, with heat plus plastic releasing the most. If you want to lower your intake, filtered tap water, not heating food in plastic, and storing food in glass or stainless steel achieve more than giving up gum.
