Caraway uses a ceramic non-stick coating free of PFAS, PFOA, lead, and cadmium. Here is what that means, where the limits are, and who it is worth it for.

The FAQ

What people ask us next.

Is Caraway cookware non-toxic?
On the available information it is one of the cleaner options in the non-stick space, with one important framing. Caraway uses a ceramic non-stick coating over an aluminium core, and the brand states the coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead, and cadmium, the substances at the centre of concern with classic Teflon (PTFE) and poorly glazed ceramics. There are test reports behind this. The framing is that ceramic non-stick coatings generally have a limited lifespan and lose their non-stick performance over time, which is a performance issue, not an acute toxicity one.
Does Caraway contain PFAS or Teflon?
By the manufacturer's statement no, and that is the core of the difference. Classic non-stick pans use PTFE, colloquially Teflon, which belongs to the PFAS family and can release problematic fumes when badly overheated. Caraway's ceramic coating is instead based on a sol-gel silica layer and is, per the brand, PFAS- and PFOA-free. For many people that is exactly the reason to switch to ceramic non-stick. We cover the Teflon and PFAS question in depth in our piece on the truth about Teflon and PFAS.
What are the honest limits of Caraway?
Mainly the durability of the non-stick effect and the price. Ceramic non-stick coatings, not just Caraway's, wear faster than well-seasoned cast iron or stainless steel, especially with high heat, metal utensils, or the dishwasher, so the pan loses non-stick performance after one to a few years. That is not a toxicity problem but a cost and sustainability point, since the pan then gets replaced. The price is also premium. If you want a very long-lasting solution, cast iron or stainless steel serves you better.
Who is Caraway worth it for?
For anyone who wants an easy-to-handle, PFAS-free non-stick pan and accepts the limited lifespan. If you value the convenient non-stick effect for eggs and delicate foods but want to move away from PTFE, Caraway is a sensible, cleanly labelled choice with attractive looks. If you want maximum longevity and heat stability, or rarely need non-stick, prefer cast iron, carbon steel, or stainless steel, which we cover in our guides to the best non-toxic cookware. Both routes are reasonable; it depends on your priorities.
