How to choose a water filter: a calm, evidence-led buyer's guide

- What is the first step in choosing a water filter?
- Find out what is actually in your water before you spend anything, because the right filter is the one that removes your specific contaminants. If you are on a public supply, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and EWG's Tap Water Database maps known contaminants by zip code. If you are on a private well, no one tests it but you, so a certified lab test is the only way to know. Buying a filter before testing is how people end up with a system that does not address their real problem, or pay for removal they do not need.
- How do I match the filter format to my contaminant?
- Match the technology to the contaminant, then the format to your living situation. For chlorine and taste, basic activated carbon is enough. For lead, look for NSF 53 certification on carbon or ion exchange. For PFAS, you need reverse osmosis or a carbon block specifically certified for PFOA and PFOS. For fluoride, only reverse osmosis reliably removes it. Once you know the technology, pick the format: a pitcher or countertop unit if you rent or want low commitment, an under-sink system if you own and want it at the tap, and a whole-house system if you also want to treat shower and laundry water.
- What do the NSF/ANSI numbers actually mean?
- They tell you what a filter is independently certified to remove, and they are the single most useful thing on the box. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic contaminants like chlorine, taste, and odor. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants such as lead, cysts, VOCs, and chromium-6. NSF/ANSI 58 is specifically for reverse-osmosis performance. NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging compounds like pharmaceutical residues and BPA. A filter certified only to 42 is not a health filter. Look for 53 at minimum, ideally 53 and 401, and 58 if it is reverse osmosis. Crucially, check what specific contaminants the certification lists, not just the standard number.
- Is a more expensive filter always better?
- No, and overbuying is as common a mistake as underbuying. A household on a clean municipal supply whose only issue is chlorine taste does not need a four-stage reverse-osmosis system; a certified carbon pitcher is enough. Conversely, someone on a confirmed PFAS-affected supply will not be protected by a basic carbon pitcher no matter how premium it looks. The right spend is the one that matches your tested contaminants. Start from your water report, not from the price tier.
- What is the ongoing cost of owning a filter?
- The cartridge, not the upfront unit, is usually the real cost, and an unchanged cartridge is worse than no filter because it can release trapped contaminants. Pitcher cartridges run a few months and add up over a year. Under-sink and RO cartridges last longer but cost more each. Whole-house carbon media lasts years, but its sediment pre-filter needs frequent changing. Before buying, total the annual cartridge cost, not just the sticker price, and set a calendar reminder, because relying on a taste change to signal replacement is unreliable.
- Will any of these remove microplastics?
- Reverse osmosis and properly rated carbon-block filters remove microplastics above roughly 0.5 microns, per multiple 2020-2023 studies. Nanoplastics below 100 nanometers are harder, and no consumer filter claims to remove all of them. A 2024 paper in PNAS (Qian et al.) found bottled water can contain up to around 240,000 nanoplastic particles per liter, so filtered tap water in glass or steel is almost certainly a lower-particle exposure route than bottled water. If microplastics are your concern, a certified carbon block or RO system plus avoiding bottled water is the evidence-based combination.
